Ever since the Supercharger network opened, Tesla’s vehicle software has enforced one non-negotiable rule: you can’t shift into gear while the charging cable is still plugged in. While that interlock prevents drivers from forgetting to remove the cable and causing damage to both their vehicle and the stall, it also creates an uncomfortable vulnerability if a threat approaches your vehicle or you have to drive away in an emergency. Now, Tesla is giving drivers an official escape hatch.
In a surprise announcement on X, @TeslaCharging introduced “Emergency Drive Away,” noting that it “lets you shift into Drive while still plugged into a Supercharger.”
Tesla’s Director of Charging, Max de Zegher, went into more detail about the new feature:
“A feature we hope you never need. We select Supercharger locations with safety in mind and relocate sites deemed unsafe. Our goal is that you always feel safe getting out to unplug. We went back and forth on this for years, but believe offering it is the right call. Don't abuse it, so we don't have to restrict it.
If you find yourself in a dangerous situation — such as being approached by aggressive individuals at an empty station or needing to evade an immediate hazard — you no longer have to step outside to remove the NACS connector.
Attempting to shift into gear while plugged in triggers a red “Emergency Drive Away” prompt on the center touchscreen. Holding the brake pedal and tapping “Activate” bypasses the lock. As you accelerate forward, the charging handle breaks away from the charge port, letting you flee immediately.
Escaping comes at a serious physical and financial cost, however. The breakaway maneuver damages both the vehicle’s charge port and the Supercharger pedestal. In Tesla’s demonstration clip, liquid glycol coolant can be seen leaking from the severed cable onto the pavement.
A mandatory service visit is required afterward to repair your vehicle’s charge port. Furthermore, Tesla confirmed that repairing the electrical and civil infrastructure on the Supercharger stall can cost up to $25,000. Short camera recordings are automatically sent to Tesla to verify emergency circumstances, and deliberate misuse will trigger strict penalties.
Given the destructive nature of the feature and how new it is, Max said Tesla will improve it quickly based on feedback. That said, Tesla drivers finally have an official, native alternative to third-party breakaway charging connectors like the EVject Escape Connector, which Tesla previously filed a lawsuit against for being “highly unsafe.”
Emergency Drive Away is rolling out over-the-air with software update 2026.38.3. The capability works without needing aftermarket adapters, but it is currently limited to Superchargers in the U.S.
On the vehicle side, all modern models are supported, though legacy Model S and Model X vehicles built before 2021 are excluded. With Tesla’s global Supercharger footprint now exceeding 80,000 stalls worldwide, international availability is expected down the road as regional regulations allow.
While breaking your charge port and a Supercharger stall is an absolute last resort, having the ability to escape without stepping outside provides vital peace of mind when seconds count.

Tesla has officially announced its delivery numbers for Q3 2026. They delivered 486,532 vehicles this past quarter, beating analyst expectations and edging above Q2, although deliveries remained below last year's third quarter. The production and delivery report also lists 464,391 vehicles produced and 13.7 GWh of energy storage deployed.
Deliveries rose 1.3% from Q2's 480,126 vehicles and fell 2.1% from Q3 2025's record-setting 497,099 deliveries. Last year's quarter included a buying rush ahead of the US federal EV tax credit's expiration.
Here’s how the numbers compare to the previous quarter:
Metric | Q3 2026 | Q2 2026 | Quarterly change |
|---|---|---|---|
Model 3/Y deliveries | 478,237 | 467,762 | +2.2% |
Other model deliveries | 8,295 | 12,364 | -32.9% |
Total deliveries | 486,532 | 480,126 | +1.3% |
Total production | 464,391 | 451,758 | +2.8% |
Energy storage deployed | 13.7 GWh | 13.5 GWh | +1.5% |
And here is the comparison year-over-year:
Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Yearly change |
|---|---|---|---|
Model 3/Y deliveries | 478,237 | 481,166 | -0.6% |
Other model deliveries | 8,295 | 15,933 | -47.9% |
Total deliveries | 486,532 | 497,099 | -2.1% |
Total production | 464,391 | 447,450 | +3.8% |
Energy storage deployed | 13.7 GWh | 12.5 GWh | +9.6% |
As expected, the “Other models” category decreased over the past quarter as Tesla sunset the Model S and Model X. The Model S/X delivery event was back in May, so those vehicles likely didn’t count toward this quarter’s numbers.
Instead, the other models category is likely fueled by the Cybertruck and the Tesla Semi. Tesla is expected to produce 50,000 Semi trucks yearly, and has just started volume production, so this will be one category to keep your eye on as Cybertruck numbers will likely remain steady.
The analyst consensus shared before the report projected 461,974 deliveries. Tesla finished 24,558 vehicles above that forecast, a 5.3% beat. The delivery estimate combined forecasts from 24 financial institutions and was not a Tesla guidance.
Metric | Q3 consensus | Q3 actual | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
Vehicle deliveries | 461,974 | 486,532 | +5.3% |
Energy storage | 15.9 GWh | 13.7 GWh | -13.8% |
Energy storage deployments grew from both comparison quarters but fell 2.2 GWh short of expectations.
Tesla's Roadster event is now scheduled for October 15 after weather concerns delayed the original October 1 date. Take a look at what we think Tesla will show off during the event.
There are also software improvements expected this coming quarter. Grok text messaging has appeared in the owner's manual, while Tesla has also confirmed work on Grok voice controls for FSD. Both are developments to watch, with releases expected this quarter.
Tesla’s full Q3 financial results will follow after market close on October 21, with the earnings webcast at 5.30 p.m. Eastern. That report will provide financial details that are missing from today’s figures. It typically gives a lot of other insight into Tesla’s future projects as well, so be sure to listen in or look for our recap following the event.
