Tesla is now promoting Tesla Insurance directly on its vehicle order page, showing buyers in supported states how FSD usage could affect their insurance costs. The new section appears beneath Full Self-Driving (Supervised), with estimated savings and options to explore different coverage levels.

When ordering a new Tesla, in the FSD section, Tesla now highlights Tesla Insurance in available markets. Tesla highlights estimated savings compared to the competition. The calculation assumes good driving, 10,000 annual miles and standard coverage. Selecting Edit Details opens an insurance estimate showing monthly premiums with and without FSD usage, alongside controls for adjusting mileage and coverage.
For example, the order page displayed an estimated $205 per month without FSD usage for a 2026 Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive configured for Austin, Texas. With 95% FSD usage, the estimate fell to $148 per month, a difference of $57.
Insurance rates are based on a variety of metrics, including town and state. Tesla is actively considering the town you live in based on the zip code, but rates will still vary from individual to individual.
How FSD Affects Insurance Costs
The addition of Tesla Insurance to the design studio likely increases both, the FSD take rate and the amount of owners who sign up for Tesla Insurance.
With Safety Score 3.0, each mile driven with FSD engaged contributes a score of 100. Tesla combines those miles with the score from manual driving to calculate the insurance rating. More FSD usage can therefore improve the combined score.
Active safety and structural crash performance have long served as core selling points for Tesla’s electric fleet, and its entry-level sedan has once again cleared federal testing with top honors. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has updated its official evaluation for the 2026 Tesla Model 3, awarding the sedan a 5-star overall vehicle safety score.
Tesla highlighted the testing milestone on X, touting that the Model 3 not only got a top score overall but also swept every individual crash test category, securing five stars across Frontal Crash, Side Crash, and Rollover resistance. The top rating applies across both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive trims.
Beyond its rigid passenger cell and impact crumple zones, the 2026 Model 3 achieved a clean sweep in active driver assistance. According to NHTSA’s testing, the vehicle meets the performance criteria for all 10 recommended safety technologies.
The evaluation encompasses four baseline recommendations that have existed from 2018 to 2026: Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Crash Imminent Braking, and Dynamic Brake Support.
Additionally, the Model 3 earned recognition for early adoption of all six upcoming Model Year 2027 recommendations. Those criteria include Automatic Emergency Braking, daytime and nighttime Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Warning, and active Blind Spot Intervention. Adding to that long list, Tesla recently also introduced a new active safety feature called Automatic Collision Evasion that activates FSD if you’re driving manually and an accident is imminent.
The 5-star accolade arrives during a busy period of regulatory interactions between Tesla and safety watchdogs. Just days ago, NHTSA launched a probe into the Cybercab as public rides began in Austin to verify that Tesla’s driverless, steering wheel-less commercial operations adhere to federal rules.
While older hardware faces agency review and driverless software draws extra scrutiny, the latest consumer builds from Tesla’s factories continue to excel in standardized physical impact testing. For buyers cross-shopping compact electric sedans, the 2026 Model 3 remains one of the safest vehicles you can put in your driveway.
