For months, the front bumper camera has been one of the most anticipated hardware additions for Tesla’s updated Model 3. In fact, the refreshed Model 3’s original renders actually featured a front bumper camera, but Tesla never shipped it with the vehicle.
Now, the wait is finally over for customers in the Asia-Pacific region, and specifically for the Japanese, Taiwanese, South Korean, and Chinese markets. Tesla has officially begun shipping slightly refreshed Model 3 vehicles from Giga Shanghai equipped with the forward-facing bumper camera and more.
To top it off, the new models also feature the return of the physical turn signal stalk, as referenced by the filing to the Chinese MIIT. Tesla has also removed the front ‘T’ logo from these newer vehicles, leaving the rear logo as the only branding on the vehicle externally.
A Clearer View Forward
The addition of a front bumper camera is likely going to play an important role in Tesla Vision and FSD. It addresses a visibility gap created by the removal of ultrasonic parking sensors (USS) and helps drivers gain a clearer view when navigating tight parking spaces, pulling up against curbs, or nosing out into traffic.
Beyond simple parking convenience, the low-mounted camera is expected to provide valuable data for FSD, especially for Smart Summon and Banish. This will offer better visibility in complex, low-speed urban environments, and we’re of the opinion that Unsupervised FSD will require it.
While its inclusion on new vehicles is a welcome development, Tesla has not announced any plans to offer a retrofit for the thousands of refreshed Model 3s already on the road without it. While it has been proven possible to retrofit the newly refreshed Model S and Model X bumper camera to older Model S and Model X vehicles, the process is quite an intensive DIY, and for now, we expect it to be the same with the Model 3, assuming your vehicle has the port on its FSD computer.
Unlike the front bumper camera, Tesla is offering a retrofit in some markets for the turn signal stalk on newer Model 3s.
The (Un)Surprising Return of the Turn Signal Stalk
Following the controversial decision to remove stalks in favor of steering wheel buttons on the updated Model 3, Tesla has begun taking steps to restore turn signal stalks, starting with the refreshed Model Y earlier this year. The button-based indicators have been a point of contention for many owners, who find them inconvenient, especially when navigating roundabouts.
This hardware reversal was foreshadowed by a recently launched retrofit program in China, which allowed certain stalkless Model 3s to have a physical stalk installed. This retrofit was a precursor to making them standard on new production vehicles from Giga Shanghai.
For now, this light refresh for the Model 3, featuring the new camera, the reinstated turn signal stalk, and the removal of the front badge, is exclusive to markets served by the Shanghai factory.
For North America and Europe, these changes will likely make their way to Model 3s there within the next few months; however, retrofits for either of these features remain uncertain.
