Tesla Plans to Expand Giga Berlin Output to 1 Million Vehicles Per Year

Tesla is preparing permit applications for a second Giga Berlin production hall more than twice the size of the current one, with construction slated for 2027.

Tesla is moving ahead with plans to turn Giga Berlin into a factory capable of building 1 million vehicles per year. As @alex_avoigt shared on X, citing a report from German broadcaster rbb, Tesla plans to build a second production hall north of the existing plant in Grünheide, with construction set to begin in 2027.

Tesla has talked about a 1-million-vehicle target since the factory’s early construction phases, but this would be the first step toward actually building it out. At that level, the European factory would sit right alongside Tesla’s largest manufacturing hub, Giga Shanghai, in annual capacity.

A New Production Hall Twice the Size

According to rbb, the new hall would cover about 5.76 million sq. ft (536,000 sq. meters), more than twice the roughly 2.35 million sq. ft (219,000 sq. meters) of the current building. Tesla plans to submit its permit applications in December, and the full expansion is expected to take about ten years.

In a statement, Tesla said it outlined the phased expansion back in 2023. It added that an approval notice from October 2024 “confirmed that the project is, in principle, eligible for approval,” and the new permit application for the northern building builds on that.

Giga Berlin Has Been Ramping Up All Year

Giga Berlin’s output target is now 7,500 vehicles per week, or roughly 375,000 per year. Reaching 1 million would nearly triple that.

The factory has already scaled up twice this year. Tesla announced a 20% production increase and 1,000 new hires in April, then ramped up again with another 1,000 jobs to hit 7,500 per week starting this month. Giga Berlin also passed 750,000 vehicles built earlier this spring, and Tesla previously shared plans for a new factory building and logistics hub on the site.

What Could Be Built There

Giga Berlin currently builds the Model Y for Europe and several export markets, including Canada. The extra space could also make room for new products. Musk said earlier this year that the Cybercab is the “most likely next major product” for Giga Berlin, with Optimus possibly following, and he recently said he hopes to bring the Cybercab to Europe soon.

The expansion also follows through on a promise Tesla leadership made to workers. Major growth at Giga Berlin was tied to employees voting against a union majority in the factory’s labor elections earlier this year.

If permits come through on schedule, construction on the new hall could start next year. The 1-million-vehicle target is still a long way off, with Tesla planning the expansion over roughly the next decade.
