Goodbye AI4, Hello SI4: Tesla Renames Its FSD Computers

Tesla’s owner’s manuals for the Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck now refer to the SI Computer, following Musk’s broader shift from "AI" to "Super Intelligence."

Tesla’s FSD computers are getting a new name. Tesla’s official Owner’s Manual has replaced “FSD Computer” with “SI Computer” in several places, and the change shows up across the manuals for the Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck (H/T to @Tesla_App_iOS).

It looks like a precursor to Tesla officially renaming the computers in its vehicles. Under the new naming scheme, HW2.0, HW2.5, HW3, and AI4 would become SI2.0, SI2.5, SI3, and SI4.

What the Manual Says Now

The FSD section of the Model Y manual now reads, “The SI Computer installed in Model Y is designed to use this input, rapidly process neural networks, and make decisions to guide you to your destination.”

The Climate Controls section uses the new name too, noting that the feature “is not supported in vehicles with SI Computer 2.0 or 2.5.” It then tells owners to “Touch Controls > Software and look at SI Computer to find out which computer your vehicle has.” It was previously listed as AI Computer.

Even if the new label hasn’t reached vehicles yet, the updated manual suggests it could show up on the touchscreen soon.

Why Tesla Is Dropping “AI”

The change follows Musk’s move to rename SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, short for SpaceX Super Intelligence, earlier this month. Tesla AI has since also become Tesla Super Intelligence, or Tesla SI. The shift came after President Trump signed an executive order directing executive-branch agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” instead of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in official materials. Musk appears to be following the government’s lead, despite his historically rocky relationship with Trump.

It’s not Tesla’s first hardware rename. Tesla previously renamed HW4 to AI4 to better reflect what it was optimized for, while HW3 kept its name since it wasn’t built with AI in mind. Tesla has confirmed HW3 won’t support unsupervised autonomy, and it plans to offer hardware upgrades for HW3 vehicles to make them compatible with unsupervised FSD. VP Ashok Elluswamy recently said Tesla could start rolling out unsupervised FSD by Q2 2027.

AI5 Could Become SI5

The new naming would also apply to future hardware. Tesla’s next-gen AI5 chip, now in trial production at Samsung’s Texas fab, could launch as SI5 instead, with later chips following as SI6 and beyond.

Tesla hasn’t officially announced the rename yet. If the manual is any sign, though, SI Computer labels could start appearing on vehicle screens in an upcoming software update.
