Over 2 million American kids are about to become SpaceX shareholders. SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell said on X that the SpaceX stock she and her husband Robert pledged will be distributed to children’s Trump Accounts starting in December, with the shares “transferring to escrow as we speak.”
At today’s price of about $135 per share, the gift is worth roughly $270 million. When Shotwell first announced it in July, SpaceX shares had closed at $162, valuing the pledge at over $324 million.
Who Gets the Shares
The first round goes to 11- to 17-year-olds living in zip codes with a median family income of $57,000 or less, plus kids in zip codes with too few residents for the census to report an MFI. Shotwell said, “These families should receive a notice by Monday.”
A second gift will be finalized in a few weeks. It’ll cover eligible 11- to 17-year-olds in military families serving overseas, kids in foster care, and more children in families earning $90,000 or less in counties near the Shotwells’ home in Texas.
The focus on older kids makes sense. Trump Accounts are tax-deferred investment accounts for children that officially launched on July 4, 2026, and they receive a $1,000 U.S. Treasury deposit for every child born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, so the 11-to-17 age group targeted by Shotwell doesn’t get that federal seed money.
Shotwell thanked SpaceX, the Treasury, the IRS, the Dell Foundation, and others for months of work to make the transfer happen.
Musk’s Gift Is Still to Come
This is separate from Elon Musk’s own pledge. Earlier this month, Musk said he’ll give one SpaceX share to every kid in America next year, calling it the first gift of many. With about 72 million children under 18 in the U.S., that gift would be roughly 35 times larger than Shotwell’s in share count.
Musk hasn’t said how those shares will be distributed, but Trump Accounts are a likely route. When Shotwell made her pledge in July, Trump had told the media that he expected Musk to donate SpaceX shares as well, saying “I think he will.”
SpaceX stock has had a busy year, from its record-setting IPO this summer to its first-ever earnings call. Shotwell’s transfer should give a preview of how Musk’s gift could work when it arrives next year.
