As Tesla continues to scale production of the Tesla Semi, its Class 8 truck is becoming increasingly more common to see. While major logistics operators have been quietly evaluating the truck for months, a recent sighting suggests that one of the world’s largest retailers may soon be using the new Tesla Semi.
A new sighting of the Tesla Semi included Costco branding for the first time, spotted operating at a warehouse in Arizona. What appear to be permanent branding, DOT numbers, and an internal vehicle ID are on the truck.
Corporate Branding
In the commercial vehicle sector, applying corporate branding to a new platform often implies that the vehicle is not simply being tested. During evaluations, companies typically utilize unbranded or manufacturer-owned units to test range, compatibility, and payload limits without drawing too much public attention.
Seeing the Semi with Costco branding suggests that Costco is already using, or may soon use, the Tesla Semi for regular deliveries.
While we’d love to see Costco adopt a more creative or flashier design, it’s great to see such a big retailer recognize the advantages of the Tesla Semi, especially one like Costco, which often prioritizes lower costs and efficiency.
The Hub-and-Spoke Model for Costco
The sighting at an Arizona warehouse highlights the exact type of operational environment where the Tesla Semi excels. Wholesale retail relies heavily on a hub-and-spoke distribution model, in which goods are transported from large centralized distribution centers to regional retail locations.
These routes are predictable, typically falling well within the Semi’s range, allowing for scheduled charging at their warehouses or distribution centers.
While this is a new sighting for the Tesla Semi, you may notice that it’s the pre-high-volume production version of the Tesla Semi, without the front light bar.
Older Design
While Tesla produces numerous of these units for production use, they switched to an updated design for mass production. The updated Semi reduces weight and increases efficiency through various improvements.
By the time Costco rolls out the Semi to more distribution centers, they’ll likely be using the latest version. What better way to keep Costco’s iconic hot dog price steady than switching to EV trucking with the Tesla Semi?
