Tesla has taken a collaborative step toward bringing FSD to Europe and Sweden. This week, Tesla performed a formal site assessment test (SAT) for FSD V14 on Swedish roads, working directly alongside the Swedish Transportation Administration.
While this is another step toward FSD arriving in Europe, it’s intriguing that Tesla is using FSD v14, which isn’t expected to be publicly available until at least later this week.
Tesla has gone from simply seeking permission to actively partnering with national regulators to validate FSD’s capabilities on local roads.
Following a similar approval process in Norway earlier this year, it was expected that approvals for highway testing in other European nations could begin as early as September. This test in Sweden appears to be a direct result of that ongoing process.
The Multi-Stage Approval Process
According to information provided by Alexander Kristensen, the successful completion of the joint test could kick off a multi-stage approval process.
First, the Swedish Transportation Administration will spend the next one to two weeks assessing the data gathered during the test. Following a successful assessment, the next step is for Tesla to receive its first official approval to test FSD V14 on approved highways and roads in the country. This is a significant milestone, as this level of public road testing hasn’t been previously permitted.
The final and most challenging step will be to gain approval for testing in complex urban environments. This will require a separate application and approval from a local municipality, with Kristensen hoping that Södertälje will be a primary candidate for these city-street tests.
Convincing with Real World Experiences
The most important outcome of gaining highway testing approval is the ability for Tesla to begin conducting live demonstrations for policymakers and regulators. Until now, there has been no official avenue for Tesla to show off FSD’s capabilities on real roads in Sweden.
This new phase will give Tesla the opportunity to invite politicians for ride-alongs, allowing them to experience the system firsthand. As noted by observers, seeing the technology’s competence in person is a vital step in building the trust and understanding necessary to convince regulators to approve its wider use.
This collaborative approach with the Swedish Transportation Administration is a positive precedent for Tesla working with European governments to safely introduce and validate FSD. With the first major hurdle cleared in yet another nation, the focus will shift towards the assessments and the subsequent push for urban testing approval.
