In a post on X early this morning, Elon Musk provided a timeline for the highly anticipated release of FSD v14. Tesla will begin deployment as early as next week with FSD v14 and will then follow it with FSD v14.1 and v14.2.
Some Tesla employees are reportedly already testing FSD v14, although it appears to be in a limited fashion.
According to Musk, FSD v14 will have three distinct updates, with v14 going into wide release, but it doesn’t go into detail on the major differences between each release.
FSD V14
The first iteration of FSD v14 is scheduled for an “early wide release” as soon as next week. While Musk mentions the phrase “wide release,” he also mentions “early,” likely meaning it's not the wide release we’re accustomed to that includes large groups of vehicles. We expect this to include the usual group of suspects, which includes Tesla’s early access group or influencers.
Whether this release extends beyond influencers will depend on the data Tesla collects and any issues they encounter. With FSD v12 and FSD v13, we didn’t see regular owners receive the update until FSD v12.2 and FSD v13.2.
Tesla typically uses the early versions of a major new update to address any issues that weren’t identified during testing.
FSD V14.1
Following the initial release, Musk states that Tesla plans to release FSD v14.1 “about two weeks later.” This version is expected to include bug fixes for issues discovered in the initial release and will likely be the first update that could go into wide release.
FSD V14.2
Musk mentions FSD v14.2, but doesn’t provide a timeframe for its release. It’s not clear whether this version will introduce new features or additional bug fixes. However, he says that FSD will feel sentient by the time this version is released.
It isn’t the first time Musk has praised the upcoming improvements in V14, as he’s previously mentioned that it is supposed to feel alive.
What to Expect
The anticipation for V14 is high for many reasons, not just because it has been over 100 days since the last FSD point release. V14 has been described as a fundamental architectural upgrade, closer to the leap of FSD V12, rather than just an incremental improvement like FSD V13. Musk has called it the second-largest update to FSD.
It’s expected to include a much larger and more powerful neural network model designed to achieve a step-change in the ability to handle complex driving tasks. The AI model will include a 10x increase in parameters and likely bring new capabilities to FSD. It will also reduce video compression, allowing the vehicle to see things more clearly. These updates will also reduce driver monitoring, according to Musk. Tesla has recently reduced the time it takes for an FSD strike to be forgiven, from 7 days to 3.5 days.
Release notes in FSD v13.2.9 list improvements such as a larger FSD model, audio inputs for handling emergency vehicles, and improvements to false braking as coming soon, which could also be included.
However, one of the more anticipated features listed in the coming soon section is the ability for destination parking options, such as parking in a parking space, driveway, or even a garage when the vehicle arrives at its destination. Musk hasn’t hinted at any of these being included yet, so we may not see them in the initial release.
The goal of this new architecture appears to be focused on more human-like intuition in complex scenarios and solving edge cases.
