The Cybercab’s new inverter might not stay exclusive to Tesla’s purpose-built robotaxi for long. In Munro Live’s deep dive into the Cybercab, Tesla’s engineers revealed that the new and improved inverter fits the same housing as the one in today’s Model Y and could be dropped right in.
Tesla’s engineers admitted you could “just swap this into a Model Y drive unit,” since Tesla kept the entire interface the same.
What’s New With the Cybercab’s Inverter
The Cybercab’s new inverter has fewer parts than the one currently shipping in Tesla’s consumer vehicles, with redundant components removed wherever they weren’t worth the extra complexity. Every component is also ready to be sourced from at least two suppliers, which helps Tesla avoid supply chain issues as demand for chips grows.
Its circuit board works with both 12V and 48V systems and is built on the same production line as the current inverter. According to the team, the new circuit board and power stage will start shipping from Fremont later this year.
“I Plead the Fifth”
When Munro Live asked directly whether the new inverter is going into the Model Y, Lars Moravy kept it cheeky. “I plead the fifth,” he said, laughing.
That isn’t a no. Tesla tries to reuse parts across its lineup wherever it can, and the new inverter is already doing that. The team said it’s “the same unit that goes in the Semi,” adding that Tesla’s “smallest vehicle and our largest vehicle are using not only the same technology, but in a lot of cases exactly the same assemblies.”
Since it uses the same shell and interface as the current unit and will be built in Fremont this year, there’s little stopping Tesla from adding it to the Model 3 and Model Y. If that happens, owners probably won’t notice anything right away, but a simpler, cheaper inverter would help Tesla keep its costs down.
