Tesla Kicks Off High-Volume Semi Production in Nevada

Tesla has officially reached a long-awaited milestone in its mission to electrify the trucking industry. On Wednesday, the automaker announced that the first unit of its refreshed Semi has officially rolled off the new high-volume production line in Nevada. This marks a major shift from the limited production runs seen over the last few years to industrial-scale manufacturing at a dedicated 1.7 million-square-foot facility.

The news was confirmed by the official @tesla_semi account on X. While Tesla’s Gigafactory Nevada is nearby, this dedicated Semi factory is a separate facility designed specifically to handle a massive production ramp. Tesla’s long-term goal is to reach a production capacity of 50,000 units annually, which would represent roughly 20% of the North American Class 8 market.

Major Engineering Upgrades

The 2026 production model isn't just a repeat of the early units delivered over the last few years; it features a massive list of engineering upgrades. One of the most significant changes is a weight reduction of approximately 1,000 pounds. This was achieved by transitioning to a 48-volt low-voltage architecture and utilizing Tesla’s 4680 battery cells.

Tesla has also borrowed "beefed-up" steering actuators from the Cybertruck to implement a fully electric steering assist system, replacing the traditional hydraulic assist found in earlier versions. Drivers will also benefit from a more advanced visibility suite, with the new Semi featuring 10 external cameras to help navigate tight spaces.

Standard vs. Long Range Performance

Tesla is offering the refreshed Semi, which the automaker first unveiled last fall, in two distinct configurations to suit different fleet needs. Both versions are powered by three independent motors on the rear axles, delivering up to 800 kW of drive power.

  • Long Range: Features a 500-mile range and utilizes three battery modules.

  • Standard Range: Offers 325 miles of range with two battery modules. Because of the smaller pack, it has a shorter wheelbase and a turning radius similar to a Tesla Model Y.

Charging these massive rigs is becoming easier, as production units are compatible with Tesla’s 1.2-megawatt Megachargers. These can recover 60% of the battery in just 30 minutes. The first public Semi charging stations have already begun to open, delivering up to 750 kW to trucks currently on the road.

A New Era for Freight

Tesla is also maximizing the utility of the Semi by using a version of the Cybertruck’s Powershare technology. This allows the truck to power refrigerated trailers directly from the main battery, eliminating the need for separate diesel generators.

With mass production now underway at the dedicated Nevada facility, the Semi is finally ready to move from a cool project to a real industry disruptor. Between government incentives and lower total cost of ownership, fleet operators like Walmart and Costco are already lining up. If Tesla can successfully hit its 50,000-unit goal, the sound of diesel engines on the highway might soon be replaced by the quiet hum of electric motors.
