On July 3rd, Tesla hit a big achievement – 10 million drive units produced between all its factories. And we’ve got some interesting statistics too.
Tesla produces a drive unit every 5 seconds. Which means by the time you’re done reading this sentence, a new drive unit was just produced. That’s spectacular!
10 Million Electric Motors
This 10 million mark includes all of Tesla’s factories, including Giga Texas, Berlin, Shanghai, and the Fremont factory. Once in the past, each drive unit was carefully produced by hand, and today, Tesla has five lines producing drive units and is ramping that figure to produce even more.
Anywhere between one to three drive units go into a vehicle – RWD vehicles have one, most LR vehicles are dual-motor, and the Cyberbeast, Plaids, and Tesla Semi all have 3 drive units. Tesla has to produce a huge number of drive units to meet the number of vehicles that Tesla sells today.
Another interesting fact – the drive units produced today, which roll off the Tesla production lines once every five seconds, cost less than half of what the hand-made original Model S drive units cost in 2012. That five-second mark most likely includes off-time for Tesla’s factories, which don’t run 24/7 shifts, but that’s still a jaw-dropping figure.
Tesla has made some amazing strives in engineering – batteries, motors, and electronics. But their engineering work is also an absolute marvel, and they’re leading the pack in designing and engineering new and better ways to produce vehicles and their parts. Drive units are complex pieces of equipment – essentially the induction motor, controllers, electronics, and everything else needed to make electricity turn into speed.
