While not impressive, this video by Whole Mars Catalog is the most glaring proof that the front bumper camera will undoubtedly become a requirement at some point. And so I am REALLY hoping that retrofits will become an option. The front bumper camera would likely have easily been able to see wide enough to get through this scenario he put the car in. Keep in mind this a Highland Model 3 Performance without the front bumper camera.

This video is an evidence of how stubborn they have been so far. A bumper camera is literally on the front line. Same as the rear camera, you wouldn't be able to exit some diagonal parkings by using the rear view mirror, since the rear camera is best positioned and has a wide angle view that... starts from the rear end. So, in the end, it wasn't only about Europeans complaining about complication about parking and the lack of birds-eye view (which ultimately arrived, even limping because the lack of the bumper camera, as this video shows)... it was mere logic. Now we expect FULL retrofits (not bullsh*t like the crippled stalk), and it's already a shame that they make us pay for them... should be considered recalls.

I wholeheartedly agree. It is baffling to me that they even had promotional images of the refreshed Model 3 in 2024 WITH the front bumper camera already, but decided “nah, let's just release it and then screw everyone over”. I mean, they can't even use the excuse of not wanting to delay release, since at that point they had already delayed it in the US by months in comparison to the China release. How much would it really have cost them to maybe delay an extra few weeks just so they can release a fully featured car that would now be in line with all the other models. I feel the same way with their mentality about making hardware versions that have absolutely no upgrade path. Like if I'm literally willing to pay you money to upgrade my car instead of having to buy a new one, TAKE MY MONEY AND GIVE ME THE UPGRADE! Or, at the bare minimum, make it to where I can potentially DIY it myself or find a 3rd party shop that would be willing to do the work. Unbelievable, honestly. Do better Tesla, we love the cars, just not the decisions you make on our behalf.

Yes that's the point. When I read someone saying "but you bought it, you can't complain, you knew" it's all false and pretentious: everyone buying other cars receives these things as normal features. In a car with a dozen cameras, the last one would be expecting is one of the main ones missing (furthermore since the removal of USSs, which some of us paid for only to see them disabled)... similarly as you wouldn't expect a tweeter missing once you see you have a sub-woofer.

P.S. I'm being subborn on the free retrofit as a matter of principle, obviously I'd be willing to paying for it, but... this is the sort of things that can easily escalate (and should escalate) a class action.

I don't think a front bumper camera that has that fish-eye lens facing forward is as good as you think. I know the rear fish eye is crazy distorted on the edges where you are expecting enough resolution to see well. I suppose a computer can understand those fewer, distorted pixels better than we as people can. Time will tell.

I suppose a computer can understand those fewer, distorted pixels better than we as people can. Time will tell.

it feels like it definitely is worth it even with slight distortion. a family member has a CT, and the front bumper camera honestly, i would pay for it if retrofits were possible. i’m not sure if it’s different on the MY/X/S, but it makes maneuvering in general an easier experience.
