Bummer. It sounded great until it involved a fee... forever. That sucks.
I agree. Whatever happened to purchasing apps? I feel like it should be an in car purchase that stays with the car- like accel boost or FSD. I could argue a $50 one time fee for the features listed. I guess with a subscription model the purchase can follow the owner around from car to car? That might be a benefit to some, but I bet it doesn’t. Now that I think about it- premium cell connection subscriptions prolly stay with the car as well, nothing follows the owner right?

Perhaps my age is showing :) but subscriptions for a garage door opener or accel boost seem bizarre.

Funny thing is- I have MyQ on my phone, never use it because of homelink. I should look into the features and add ons there.

I can see a bundle coming, premium cell connection + Spotify (or some streamer) + MyQ For $x / month. Cell companies are already doing this.

Wow, this just went from a great addition to garbage in a hurry. I was really looking forward to this since we have two myQ openers I don't have on my homelink because it's already full. There is no way I'm paying $179 to use this on the car's interface when I can already operate it on my phone and have an opener in addition.

Very disappointing that this is limited to myQ and not configurable for other parties such as Tuya or SmartThings.

When I found out about the possibility of automatically operating my garage door from my car I was super happy. Then I found out it was MyQ, and my joy turned to uncertainess. MyQ (Chamberlain) are aggressively closed source but I thought that maybe they would be cool, just this once. I even thought that they might support Matter at some point so that everything could work together. It turns out they are actually moving in the opposite direction and closing down their Apple HomeKit compatibility. WTF?! 💢

As if that weren't bad enough, now we get the news that they want to charge a subscription fee to use my garage door opener. No thank you. I'll purchase a completely new garage door opener before I succumb to that garbage. And I can guarantee it wont be a Chamberlain opener!

Get a wifi $40 garage door controller that works with existing opener and smartthings. When approaching your door opens. The end.

No clue why they can't just give us one feature without a subscription fee. (MyQ). Seems like they want to charge for any little thing. This will be an absolutely excellent addition to the car that for me will be a complete flop that I absolutely will not use if it comes with a subscription cost. If they wanted to charge for it, then a 1 time fee at a reasonable amount (which to me would be around $50 or less) I'd probably go for it but for the pricing being mentioned its a no go for me. Guess I'll just continue picking up the garage door opener and doing it the old fashioned way lol

Yea, I was actually thinking that an alternative might be to use the OpenGarage controller ($50) and Home Assistant to do the same thing. This keeps everything local and completely in my control, with no subscriptions. It's a bit more work and it doesn't integrate with Tesla as cleanly, but it should do what I need it to do.

And who knows, maybe at some point in the future Tesla will allow us some API access to do things like this (unlikely).

What is this fee about? I have been using MyQ with my android phone and Model Y for over a year and I pay nothing. I just use the MyQ app. When I drive up my phone brings up the app automatically and I hit the big blue button. Thanks for nothing Tesla.

Right? Although, if MyQ is bringing up a button for you to tap why not just open the *&^% door for you? Strange that the app works like that.I wouldn’t blame Tesla for the price tag, I’m sure Tesla takes an app-store like cut but the other 66 or 80% goes to the MyQ developer. I’d be surprised if that isn’t how it works.

It works that way because I have set it to work that way. I live in the city and I don't want the door to open unless I tell it to. Maybe Apples aren't as smart and Tesla has to do something extra for them. BTW MYQ charges nothing for the app and I can see status and open and close my garage from anywhere in the world today. It also works with Amazon delivery and they don't charge to use it either.

I think the fee comes from integrating with things outside the MyQ space. So, if you want to integrate the MyQ system with your car (Tesla) then you have to pay a fee.

So Tesla is charging to integrate a free app that provides a benefit they left out of Model 3 & Y. They should be thanking and paying MyQ and firing the designers who left it out in the first place. They didn't charge us when they added the side camera view because they left out side collision warning and I bet it cost more.

The advantage of this is that if the door is already open, the car won't close it as you approach the driveway, nor will it open a closed door when it should be trying to close it. The other advantage is that it could get people to buy the MyQ hardware...if they didn't have a subscription fee. By charging for something with a minor advantage, they are cutting of their biggest selling point.

Another advantage is that it will get rid of the limit of three devices. But it means removing my current garage door from Homelink, and adding it to MyQ so I get one more entry. I have no direct control over the hardware for the others, so adding MyQ to them is not an option. I have two more potential ones that I'd add to the menu, but neither has or will have the MyQ hardware.

It also has the advantage that the car will know if it's successful. It would be nice not to have to press the screen when it doesn't work, so currently, it's a matter of living with a greater chance of having to press the screen manually, or dealing with having to be closer when it's activated, and possibly having to wait for a gate or door to open.

Hopefully, somebody from Chamberlain will have the common sense to realize that there are millions of potential Tesla customers who would go out and buy the MyQ hardware instead of the Homelink hardware, if they didn't have to pay for a subscription. But I doubt that more than a small fraction of them would pay for the subscription, when they could spend slightly more on Homelink for a lifetime solution.

I don't see the point of throwing money away as my simple door controller attached to my passenger sunvisor will do the job for years to come until Robo Taxi happens so maybe it will never be replaced.

I don't know, there are a couple of reasons that I might like to have an automatic garage door opener. I keep the old push button remote in the drivers door pocket and it works pretty well. But the signal is not great so I have to be almost in the driveway before it can activate my garage door. Also my garage door opens kinda slow so I always have to wait for it to open fully before I can pull in. It would be great if the door could start opening while I'm a couple of houses away and be completely open when I arrive. It's not much, but it would feel very premium.

Finally, I've been wanting to add this functionality to my home automation system anyway. Sometimes the door doesn't close properly (when the sun hits the sensor just right) and I don't know about it for an extended time. Or maybe I left it open overnight by mistake. My home automation could close it for me, or at least warn me that it's open when it shouldn't be. To have it work from my car is just an additional cherry on top.

I've had Homelink on every vehicle I've owned since 2000, including my Teslas, and I didn't have to pay for the feature on any of them. Tesla charging for Homelink, as if a garage door or gate isn't an everyday feature already makes no sense. Even for the relatively small percentage who don't use it, it affects the utility as a used car.

Chamberlain doesn't understand that I don't want to pay them an extra $10/year to be able to tell Google to open my garage door, not because I can use the app but because I can use Homelink. I certainly don't want to spend money to allow my car to send the same information over the Internet that my car would send.

These companies need to understand that it's not about monetizing everything. I bought the myQ originally because it was designed to work with my particular garage door. They now sell it as a separate add on but I can't count how many Chamberlain/Liftmaster/Craftsman openers I've bought for multiple houses, and the feature will attract customers, while the subscription will repel them. If a competing brand comes along that offers what they do with no subscription, that's a reason to get a different garage door opener next time.
