i saw the news report. i am interested to see what the investigation findings will turn up to be. so far, it seems like the kiddo came out behind a car, and the car was traveling about 17 MPH (27 KMH), but when it made impact, it reduced it down to 6 MPH (a little less than 10 KMH).

The self driving car did do a lot of things correct: drove speed limit, slowed down, applied brakes, pulled over, waited for police, most likely recorded impact. A human driver might have hit kid at a must faster speed and quite possibly taken off.

The kid broke the law, he did NOT utilize the safer crossing section and bolted out into oncoming traffic in between parked cars.

BUT-the self driving sortware (in this incident) should have slammed on the brakes (factoring the speed, distance, carbon-based life form as opposed to a soccer ball).

Interesting note: waymo has been at this for years, they chose and brag about SENSORS, 19 CAMERAS, LIDAR, TELEMETRY SENSORS, the "safe" coding sortware systems yelling "this is safer than Tesla's Vision camera based systems"

Yet, the fact remains-they hit a kid at low speeds and a few months ago-hit a towns treasured cat and it died, not too mention all the stranded waymos due to a power outage. All this happened with all those gadgets, gizmo's, protruding spinning things and "safe priority" software, permits, licensed in a protected geo fenced area.
