There‘s a wreck in the news where a motorcycle went down (rear tire blew out or something) on a highway, then the driver was run over by a ‘SUV’ and also a Tesla. The Tesla on autopilot (according to the report I saw) didn’t avoid the body of the MC rider. Of course Tesla is held to a higher standard than the unidentified manufacturer SUV’s driver.
This was on a highway with an 80MPH speed limit! Some talking head speculated Radar or LiDAR would have seen the body and potentially avoided running over it. I’m gonna speculate that physics dictates there was no safe way to NOT run over the driver. Physics rules our reality for the time being, until we get the quantum stuff down. Seeing something at 80+MPH is one thing, being able to avoid it without losing control and/or hitting something else like another vehicle is another.
My heart goes out to the MC rider’s family and friends. I can’t imagine falling off a bike at 80+ would be survivable in the best of circumstances.
