Nice, they used to do this for fire or hurricane evacuees. Maybe they have been and the Press about that isn't covered as much as it's common? Are there any other networks large enough to do this and have an impact?

Tesla has done this a few times before. During hurricanes like Irma in 2017 and Dorian in 2019, they temporarily made Supercharging free in affected areas. They also unlocked extra battery capacity on some older, software-limited Model S and Model X vehicles to help people evacuate. It got national and international coverage too, though local news stations often covered it more heavily.
