So after the first day and a little over 50 miles on FSD v14.2 I have a lot of thoughts. I will try to keep it simple and short.
First, it definitely is a lot smoother, but almost feels like they severely pulled back the reaction time. It might be that they just smoothed it out and there is no added delay in reaction, but it certainly feels like it isn't reacting to things as “twitchy” as before. To the point that I'd dare say we are near FSD 13.2.9 smoothness levels.
Second, the brake stabbing and lane indecision seems to be “mostly” gone. I say mostly because there were a few instances where the car did behave differently than I would have expected. For example, there was a moment where a cyclist approached an intersection rapidly but turned onto a sidewalk. The car hit the brakes very aggressively, and even once they were past us, the car did some very minor braking thinking they would jump out onto the street. The lane indecision is where I think it improved most. On the highway, it wanted to switch lanes, but then hesitated for a moment. I tried to see if there was a reason for it, so I took a dashcam recording of it and watched it back. It turned out that the car didn't really hesitate, but had canceled the lane change due to a car in that lane speeding up at the last second.
Third is the speed profiles. This is where I think the most notable change happened. All the profiles with the exception of Sloth seem to have been dialed WAY back in terms of speed, and standard seems to have been also dialed back in aggressiveness. I spent most of my time between chill and standard, and now those two speed profiles feel like they are supposed to feel, in my opinion. Overall, they just feel more refined and like they react more appropriately to their surroundings, rather than just trying to go as fast as possible at all times. The other thing I noticed is that I no longer have the issue with it getting stuck at a certain speed. For example, on version 14.1.4 there were instances where if I entered the highway on hurry but then switched into standard, it would stay at the hurry speed rather than slowing down to the standard speed. The only fix for this was to either disengage FSD and then enable it again, or switch all the way down to sloth and then back up to standard to “reset” the speed. This appears to be fixed in 14.2 and haven't really experienced it yet.
Overall, this version does appear to be an improvement over the 14.1 branch of updates, and I could see now why Tesla feels more comfortable sending this out to more people. I do really hope that they didn't sacrifice reaction time in favor of smoothness, but only time will tell. It does feel like a definite upgrade from the version I was on previously (14.1.4) and I'm just glad I don't have to deal with the brake stabbing anymore.
Will update further if I find anything notable in the coming days.
