Battery preconditioning question

I noticed when navigating to a supercharger the battery preconditioning starts about 1 hour prior arrival which seems way too early. On my last trip (100km) this required 8.3 % of my total battery charge! (outside temp around 3 Celsius/ 36 Fahrenheit)
Is this normal system behavior?

My 2023 Model 3 LR does the same thing, starts preconditioning 100 miles before I get to the charger. Temps outside were in the 50s.
I stopped at the convenience store 5 mins before going to the charger that was 500 feet away, After I plugged it in a warning popped up and said "next time precondition the batter for faster charging". So who knows what's going on, It's charged at full speed. For a computer on wheels, this is not unusual. ;]

Thanks for the reply. I also got a super fast charge in this case, but I was just amazed how much energy is “wasted” for conditioning the battery…

I found this discussion today, more info than I'll ever need.
