A specific facial expression comes to mind while reading this, and it's: 😬

I truly do hope that our current HW4 cars are fully capable of some form of unsupervised FSD. As it stands, I don't plan on buying another car for a minimum of another 5 to 7 years and potentially more depending on how well it holds up in the battery degradation department. While FSD is great today, it would really suck if we don't get unsupervised and are still required to pay full price for FSD with zero path or option to upgrade the hardware to allow for unsupervised.

Just the fact that Tesla is already currently aware of the need for better camera cleaning systems and actively implementing them in their robotaxi fleet but still doesn't allow retrofits for consumer vehicles is a bad sign, imo. Even something as simple as the fact that they aren't offering retrofits of the front bumper camera to 2024 Highland models is a bad sign to me.

If HW5 is released and it truly is in the simplest sense "impossible" to retrofit, then that would be terrible. But I guess they have some form of confidence in HW4 seeing as that is what they are upgrading current HW3 owners to (unless they aren't).

uh oh. beginning of the end for HW4?
The beginning to the end of HW4 started when HW5 was first announced and confirmed. That said, the thing we should be hoping for, and in my opinion, pushing Tesla more on, is to allow for retrofits, especially since now is the best time to do so while the new hardware is still being finalized.

Surely if they can make HW4 fit into HW3 cars, it is possible to do HW4 to HW5; after all, I believe at one point they even said that HW3 to HW4 was not necessarily impossible but extremely difficult due to cooling design differences and a ton of other reasons. I don't think they can use that as an excuse again.

So- if running FSD unsupervised requires hardware updates from AI4 then does Tesla start selling FSD unsupervised? If it is truly needed and I want to rent it $99/month or whatever then they have to update the car. Then after a few months I stop the subscription and Tesla lost money on my car. But if they SELL me it at $10k or whatever then it’s prolly worth doing the upgrade. Math.
Sadly, I’m VERY aware that my car came with SUPERVISED FSD included, how much do you want to bet they make me pay for unsupervised when it is available?
Things are about to get weird.I was joking that Tesla would put half a yoke in cars before going fully unsupervised. Just the left half I guess. Sadly I’m at my free limit with Grok and generating images so I can’t post a mock up :) .

The whole story sounds oddly familiar to what happened to HW3... :( Stay strong folks, if Tesla is really offering the HW upgrades for HW3 then hope is high HW4 can also be upgraded to the later iteration at some point!
